Since young, James has always wanted to be involved with racehorses and the racing industry. At the age of 16, he joined trainer Mark Pitman in Lambourn, United Kingdom, as a groom and track rider, and quickly progressed to getting his jockey's license. After a season of jump racing in the UK, James did some work experience in New Zealand with John and Karen Parsons, which cumulated in a ride in the feature race of the Grand National Racing Carnival in New Zealand.
A few years later, James worked as Assistant Trainer for the late Lambourn trainer John Hills. In 2010, he accepted an offer from Michael Freedman to join his stable in Singapore as senior track rider. After a few months, James was given more responsibilities and started taking over the position of Assistant Trainer to Michael Freedman. James was travelling foreman for outstanding horses like Mr Big, Better Be The One and Super One when they raced overseas.
At the end of 2015, Michael returned to Australia and James became caretaker trainer for Michael's horses. He was officially granted his trainer's license in April 2016.
Although he has hung up his jockey boots, James still rides track work daily. He believes it is an integral part of his training plan as he gets a personal account of how his horses feel, and knows first-hand the optimum way to bring out the best in them.
